I liked the fresh honesty about this book. Sinclair Lewis has an ability to cut to the heart of each subject matter, whether serious or funny, making me see that topic in a totally fresh way. This was a read that took me through an era that was much simpler than now but was still relevant to the emotions we deal with today.

The Trail of the Hawk A Comedy of the Seriousness of Life Sinclair Lewis 9781493770762 Books Reviews

Trail of the Hawk is a delightful, early novel by the young Sinclair Lewis. Written a few years after "Martin Eden," by his friend and colleague, Jack London, Lewis's skill as a story-teller is already apparent. While "Martin Eden" is modeled after London's own amazing, short life, "The Hawk is pure fiction. Martin Eden is essentially auto-biographical. Jack London lived much the same life as his character a bold adventurer with no formal schooling.

On the other hand, Lewis's "Hawk" is pure fiction, but with a character obviously similar to Martin Eden. The two authors were friends and colleagues; London's name is even mentioned, with clear admiration, in "The Hawk." The two authors shared a youthful admiration for socialism, clear in all their work. But, unlike with Upton Sinclair, their contemporary, "Socialism" is not forced like a bludgeon upon the reader. The story itself is the weapon.

The Hawk begins his amazing career as a stunt pilot in the early years of aviation. As his friends and colleagues meet tragic ends, he realizes there must be a better way to use his life. His path is highly non-linear; he tries an assortment of opportunities. Parallel to his professional life, his romantic life has its ups and downs (no pun intended). It's never clear if he will settle down with his boyhood playmate from the prairie or the New York socialite he meets quite by chance. There is room for even another flame, knowing how Lewis can alter his protagonist's path, even late into the story (e.g. Dodsworth). Of course, all the romance is quite Victorian, as is nearly all the pre-1930 American prose. Nothing more than hand-holding here, even for engaged couples. But that is part of the charm.

If you are prepared for a long, flavorful journey, with all the writing skills of this master (Lewis was the first American to win the Nobel Literature Prize), this book is for you.
You should warn your customers that the book comes in the form of a "manuscrip-like book". You advertised it as an "Affordable & High Quality Paperback Book Edition" which is not entirely true. The real description should read "Affordable, manuscript-type book in A4 size paper, printed in 'courier' set type" margins not justified to the right".That way I would NOT have bought it, since the format is very difficult for me to handle. In fact as the picture of the cover "shows" the front cover, when you align it to other books you are deceived in thinking it's a "normal" paperback.
Lewis' descriptions of life in the U.S. during his time are very apt, and often very funny. His books are a pleasure to read, even after many many years.
Reading Lewis is like taking a Literary Antiques Roadshow journey through the early days of the last century. I love the detail he gives of people, clothes, places and technology.
WARNING DO NOT BUY THE VERSION OF THIS BOOK WITH THE LIGHT BLUE COVER.

The font size of the typeface is approximately 6-8. You will need a magnifying glass in order to read this version of the book.
All I had ever read from Lewis was grim and deadly serious. I did not know he could write something so silly and so much fun to read.
I liked the fresh honesty about this book. Sinclair Lewis has an ability to cut to the heart of each subject matter, whether serious or funny, making me see that topic in a totally fresh way. This was a read that took me through an era that was much simpler than now but was still relevant to the emotions we deal with today.
