MAKING HEADLINES

Brooke Hastings almost won a Pulitzer Prize for her hard-hitting reportage. Now she’s sitting on the story of a lifetime and wants to prove she’s not a one-hit-wonder. But in order to get the world to take notice, she’ll need the help of the one person she loves to hate—Brian Dalton.

Brian Dalton stumbled into celebrity when he landed a show on the Earth Channel. But the hunky marine biologist never forgot the serious, studious boy who left Mobile a decade before. Now back in Alabama, he’s looking for the quiet life he always wanted and hoping for a chance with the girl he always loved. When Brooke asks him to help expose some of the lingering effects of the Gulf oil disaster, Brian jumps at the chance to help preserve the place both call home…

(4.5 stars) OK, now. This is a romance, so the sexual innuendo of the title makes it look cheap. But it's not. We get lots of sex, yes, but we also get a much deeper look into the H/h relationship than I'd expected in a 161-page novel.

The two Alabama natives had known each other since childhood. Their elementary school friendship became a frenemy-ship in high school. Both very bright (H = high school valedictorian; h = high school salutatorian), Brooke, the daughter of a lawyer and a former beauty queen, tried to hide her brainiac side with her sociability, amiability, social skills and beauty while Brian was just a nerd, lacking the social skills required for popularity and social success in high school.

But the last time they had ever seen each other a decade before the beginning of this book, he had planted a hot, intense kiss on her in front of the whole high school class, walked out, left town and made a success of himself as a hunky scientist with his very own cable network program.

No shabby act herself, Brooke is a successful journalist and almost Pulitzer prize winner working at a local newspaper. Still putting up with an overbearing mother, with a boss who's jealous of her almost Pulitzer, Brooke has a deep desire to write a no-holds-barred expose on the devastating lingering effects of the Gulf oil spill disaster. Well, Brian is back in town and she'd like his big-name collaboration to give her work even more gravitas.

So there you are. In some ways it's just your typical frenemies-to-lovers romance, yet it's much better than the average bear CR.
The writing is excellent, the characters are very well developed, and the romance may be hot but the sex is neither gratuitous nor vulgar, just the organic inevitable culmination of a relationship that had been complicated from the beginning.

Hard to believe that this is only 161 pages. However, to make it a perfect 5-star book I would have liked more pages with development of the H/h collaboration in their environmental investigation and expose. As it was, the ending seemed a bit abrupt to me. I'm still giving this a rounded-up 5 stars because it was such an unexpected quality read, albeit short.

Going Deep Coastal Heat Book 1 eBook Maggie Wells Reviews

It’s such a pleasure when you come upon a story that’s as smartly written as this one. Doesn’t hurt that the hero and heroine have brains and beauty to spare. But what I appreciated most was the history the two characters shared. It made their reunion as adults much more meaningful.

This isn’t your typical friends-to-lovers story. More like competitive rivals realizing they were both after the same thing all along. But there’s way more than a would-be romance on the line here. Brooke’s after a story, and Brian could be the guy to help her give it the attention it needs. Their interview on board his ship turns into an explosion of chemistry that would wow any scientist.

“I’ve known you almost all my life and wanted you for half that time.”

Brooke and Brian fall fast and deep, combining their forces into a story that makes headlines and a love that transcends it all. The characters, the setting, and the richness of this story will pull you under for a hell of a fun ride!

“What do I look like when I’ve been kissed right?” “You look like you belong with me.”

I know I’ll be reading this one again and again!
Another fabulous read from Maggie Wells--not even sure where to start, as I usually end up gobbling up her books and often just go back to the beginning and start over again without much time left for putting my feelings into words. Alas, loves us when we leave these reviews and I think the authors appreciate it as well. Humor, wit, and heat are served up in abundance in Going Deep as these rivals get their second chance at love. I'm such a huge fan of second-chances, especially centered around unrequited love from high school. Maybe because I had a few instances of that in my life. I can relate. How I adored watching the hero and heroine each slowly let down their guard, quicker to exchange a cutting remark and give the other an inch, until well…finally, inches are given and wonderful feelings ensue. The writing is so jam-packed with imagery and action, you feel like you're right there. A loving story that feels complete and real--so much in contemporary romance leaves me feeling neither of those. Now excuse me while I go back and revisit the boat sex scene...
My favorite thing about Going Deep? Hands down, the narrative’s quick-witted and smart sense of humor. The banter, animosity, and simmering sexual tension between main characters kept me invested through the last chapter. Even though the second Coastal Heat installment (Flip This Love) will feature a different couple, I’ll definitely be reading when it comes out.

Additional elements I liked
• I loved the dynamic between the two main characters. Their history actually reminded me how pivotal one’s high school experience can be, and how common it is to carry those memories—those grudges—for many years.
• While I usually read new adult romance (which features a younger cast of characters), reading about Brooke and Brian’s established, specialized careers was refreshing. The latter’s was especially unique to me as a reader, which is awesome because I learned about a new-to-me field of study while simultaneously being entertained.
• The author’s use of language, especially the “smart” vocabulary and word play.

Favorite scene the characters’ rib-eating rendezvous )

Favorite quote “Brooke seemed to shift and reform with each time he blinked. Like a kaleidoscope of gorgeous pink and gold hues. A crazy amalgamation of the determined girl everyone underestimated because she happened to be born beautiful…”

If you’re looking for a light-hearted tale with a sense of humor—where the brainy type wins out over the once-popular bad boy, and where manners and etiquette reign supreme—Going Deep by author Maggie Wells makes an excellent choice.
